  5. 1.  INTRODUCTION

  7. The purpose of this paper is to explain why HP undertook the SNAplus
  8. project, how it will impact your customers, and provide you with the
  9. information necessary to discuss SNAplus with your customers.

  12. 2.  WHY HP IS MIGRATING THE SNA CLASSIC PRODUCTS TO SNAplus
  13.  
  14. Prior to SNAplus, our IBM connectivity solution came from multiple
  15. vendors, was incomplete, and was not able to provide solutions for new
  16. IBM networking technology.
  17.  
  18. With SNAplus, HP has chosen a strategic partner, with a vision similar
  19. to our own, of the direction in which we need to evolve our IBM
  20. connectivity products.  This partnership will enable HP to provide the
  21. networking solutions our customers need today, as well as future IBM
  22. networking technology solutions.
  23.  
  24. The SNAplus solution on the HP 9000 platform will replace the
  25. functions available with the old classic SNA products and will augment
  26. these products with important new functions.
  27.  
  28. Migration to SNAplus will require customers who are running the
  29. classic LU6.2 API to modify their applications.  Substantial
  30. differences exist in calling structure, parameters and transaction
  31. program logic between the classic SNA LU6.2 API and the SNAplusAPI
  32. interfaces.  This is because each vendor implements the LU6.2
  33. specification differently.  (Documentation is available now to help
  34. you and your customers to prepare for migration to SNAplusAPI.)
  35.  
  36. In presenting SNAplus to customers with LU6.2 applications, it is
  37. important to help them understand why HP is moving to SNAplus and to
  38. emphasize the added functions they will be receiving, at no cost
  39. (provided they are on support contract), for example, SNA over Token
  40. Ring, Motif interface, LU0,1,2,3 interfaces, EHLLAPI.

  42. The existing, as well as new functions, provided by SNAplus over the
  43. classic SNA products, are outlined in this document in order to help
  44. you to explain the new functionality your customers will be receiving
  45. with SNAplus and position the work which will be required to port
  46. existing applications to SNAplusAPI.
